Rejection 4, 5 and 6

Yep, you guessed it. Over that past week I have received three more rejections from literary magazines. Just if you were wondering, they were three different stories. I am going to take a look at all three stories before I send them out to other markets.

In other news, when I am not working on fixing my short stories, or making sure they fit the right market, I have begun to write a novel. I’m unsure if I want to pursue it as a novel (the idea originally came to me as a script) but I’m going to continue with it until something changes.

But back to rejections, I was wondering something. How many rejections did you receive before you were published, either “traditional publishing” or self-publishing? Thanks for reading and I hope everyone has a great weekend. 🙂

  1. About a bagillion, so you can imagine how freaking ecstatic I was to receive an offer! The most awesome day of my life! Rejections are a standard part of becoming published. I learned to see it as: it’s not meant to be with that particular publisher/agent.
As Dory says it, “Just keep swimming!” And you will soon enough make it!

    • So glad to hear that you got an offer. 🙂 I find it easier to accept the rejection (does that make sense?) after a few days. Like today, I received Rejection #6, which kind of hurts, but I know by tomorrow that feeling will be gone. Hopefully, replaced by the familiar feeling knowing that even though I was rejected, I’m still trying. Which is something I was afraid to do even two months ago.

      • It makes total sense…I was right alongside of you not too long ago. Every time my phone went off with an alert, I automatically braced myself for the inevitable rejection that was to come.

And it hurt every single time.

But the bright side is exactly what you just said, the feeling will be gone, replaced by the courage you use everyday to submit. Keep submitting! Your place in the world is out there. 🙂

      • I know how that feels, every time I see an email starting with “Dear Austin,” I know that I’m about to have a pretty horrible couple of minutes while I deal with the rejection. I can only imagine how that first acceptance will feel and I know that I need to keep getting rejections to have that moment of accomplishment. Thank you for your kind words. 🙂
